Letterpress edition of The Cycle

The third edition of The Cycle, my novel without words, is now available to purchase.

The narrative of  The Cycle is told within 187 engraved blocks, and the book uses a total of 200 engraved blocks. Each block took one day to engrave, with several months of drawing & preparation to reach that stage.   The Cycle took me 2 years to complete and I made only 12 copies, hand printed and bound by myself, for the first edition .. 

This third edition of The Cycle, a collaboration between Richard Lawrence and myself, has been printed letterpress by Richard and professionally bound in an edition of 126 copies ..

The Cycle completed..?

An ambitious project from start to finish, The Cycle, a novel told in 187 engravings, was conceived in 2005. Inspired by my experiences working for a small charity, The Cycle follows in the tradition of novels in woodcuts where hand-cut images replace text as the narrative form. The narrative follows a couples' struggle to bring up two children on low wages whilst dealing with the realisation that their lives do not match up with what is presented to them. The brothers end up repeating their parents' mistakes but after a chance intervention, one brother begins to make different choices and starts to change his life ...  The narrative is told within 187 engraved blocks, and the book uses a total of 200 engraved blocks. Each block took one day to engrave, with several months of drawing and preparation to reach that stage.  The Cycle took me 2 years to complete and I made only 12 copies, hand printed and bound by myself, for the first edition.

EDITIONS
1st edition 2007

In 2007 the artists' first edition of 12 copies was completed, hand bound & hand printed by the artist.

2nd edition 2010

In 2010 The Cycle was commercially published in a litho edition and retitled by the American publisher as  "Walking Shadows: A Novel Without Words. This edition is currently for sale.

 

3rd edition 2013  

The Cycle was printed letterpress by Richard Lawrence in 2012 then bound and published in 2013. This edition is currently available for sale priced at £125...

A passion for drawing & printmaking: 1992-2013

Clair has been busy cataloguing my work in preparation for an update to my web site and has discovered my print collection, blocks I have cut and printed, includes hundreds of individual lino cuts, wood cuts and engravings, plus my book work engravings. 

I made my first prints around 1992 when Clair found her old lino cutting kit and I haven't really stopped since.  It has been good looking through the plan chests at all my old work to see how it has developed over the years; from the naiive, expressive linocuts and woodcuts of the 1990’s to the complex cuts of the engravings I am producing now.

Drawing forms the basis of all my work and has been fundamental to my practice since art college where my tutors instilled the importance of drawing daily. Drawing inspires me and my practice as a relief printmaker and artist. By drawing the familiar (objects and landscapes) through observation I record a sense of place and this inspires my printmaking. Both drawing and printmaking have become a real passion over the years.
  
I think if Clair knew what it would all lead to, as she now spends hours scanning in my collection of prints, she may not have introduced me to her lino cutting kit all those years ago when we were renting a cottage on a farm and had time on our hands .. home brewing beer, drawing and lino cutting .. perfect.

This original limited edition print was produced before the "Living in Norfolk" series and is based on drawings of my skinny dog taking over the comfiest seat in the room, as usual. The Liquorice Whippets in Black and White

As part of my engraving process, I like to produce a black and white edition and a colour edition when it seems appropriate for the design and I feel the image is strong enough to be carried into black and white, or vice versa . This was the case with LIQUORICE WHIPPETS ON ECCLES SEA WALL. Due to the popularity of the colour edition being currently exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, London, I thought it would be interesting for you to see this black and white edition..
